FIFA World Cup Venues - Kaliningrad Stadium

Kaliningrad Stadium, also known by its name Arena Baltika or Königsberg Stadium, is a football stadium in planning and design whose construction will be completed to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup. It will also be the home stadium of the FC Baltika Kaliningrad team.

It was decided to build a new stadium in the city of Kaliningrad because the stadium with the city (Baltika Stadium) does not have enough capacity, is very old and not well located for such an event. For that reason it was thought of a stadium with more capacity, more modern and with better access. There was one extra factor to consider in the stadium design process: stadium capacity has to be reduced to approximately 25,000 seats by the end of the World Cup, so that the stadium can continue to be useful to the relatively small population of the stadium region.

The stadium will no longer be located in the eastern part of the city, but will be located on the banks of the Pregolya River. The designers attempted to integrate the historical aspect that lies on the outskirts of Kaliningrad, with the water running along the river next to the stadium. After this is to name within the relations the port of the city that also gives a touch to the artistic characteristics of the construction. What the designers wanted to do was to give the inhabitants and visitors of Kaliningrad a place where they could enjoy the best football in the world during the World Cup and with the passage of it served for other activities and not just football.
